What is wax? It is actually an organic substance that becomes solid at room temperature and turns liquid when heated. Waxes can be classified into two groups: natural waxes and synthetic waxes.

Natural waxes are derived from plants, animals, or petroleum. Waxes such as carnauba, soy, coconut, apricot are used in food additives, cosmetics and candle making. Natural waxes are biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Many of them are produced by a process called hydrogenation.

Paraffin wax is a byproduct of oil refining process. It is considered safe but during burning produces more soot than vegetable waxes.

There is no perfect wax. Each wax has its own pros and cons. However high-quality waxes burn cleanly and safely. Please keep in mind that there is no 100% soot-free candle wax. All organic substances emit some carbon (soot) in the process of burning. Carbon emission is a product of incomplete combustion.
